STUDENTS’ PERSPECTIVES ON SPEAKING IN ENGLISH EXTRA CLASS: A DESCRIPTIVE QUALITATIVE STUDY

Abstract


The purpose of this research was to explore students’ perspectives on speaking in English extra classprovided for the second year of senior high school students at one private senior high school in Jambi City. Datafor this study were collected through a demographic questionnaire and in-depth interviews with ten students.Thedata were analyzed using within-case and cross-case displays and analysis. There were four major themesobtained from the interview. The first theme was related to students’ perspectives on English extra class. Thesecond theme was related to the students’ perspective on speaking in the English extra class. Then, the thirdtheme was related to the activities that were provided by the English extra class.The last theme was related tothe factors that handicap students to speak English.The implication of this research is as a source of informationfor the schools and teachers about the other ways to improve students speaking skill it is by having English extraclass.
