Abstract
Media texts come from traditional print and non-print sources like newspapers, magazines, radio, television as well as newer sources like the ones found on the Internet, web applications and various social media platforms. One common thread that runs through these texts is that each aims to position its listener/ reader/ viewer in certain ways. Hence, the key to a successful literacy curriculum is to empower learners understand this basic premise and develop them into critical thinkers and discriminating users of media. However, the multimodal nature of many of these texts often make them difficult to negotiate. This keynote address proposes a systematic and easy-to-use framework to inject ‘the critical’ into the language classroom. Using a modified and updated version of the Four Resources Model (Freebody & Luke, 1990; Chan & Chia, 2014), participants will be able to see how multimodal media texts can be critically examined and explored.
